A team of researchers at St George's University London (UK) has found that people who die of a heart attack during or shortly after "falling in love" are very rare, according to the medical website Medical Express.
An article published in the medical journal JAMA Cardiology describes a study of data from the University of St George's College London's cardiac pathology center and its findings on the incidence of sudden death during "love".
Stories often depict characters, especially older men, having a heart attack and dying while "drunk". Researchers have been trying to see how real the risk of sudden death from a heart attack while in love is.
They looked at patient records at the heart pathology center at St George's University London for evidence of people dying in love and found the total number of people who had this event.
After looking at 6,847 patients who had died suddenly over the previous 16 years - from a sudden heart attack, they found that only 17 of these people had occurred during sex or within an hour. after "falling in love", the rate is only 0.2%, according to Medical Express.
The researchers noted that 11 out of the 17 cases mentioned above were men, but what is special, unlike what people think, is that they are not old. Their average age is just 38.
The researchers note that these results differ from previous studies that have shown most such sudden deaths occur in older men.
The researchers found that nearly half of the cases had underlying heart disease. The other half, including eight people with no history of heart disease, experienced cardiac arrest due to sudden cardiac arrhythmia syndrome.
And two of them died from aortic rupture - a condition in which the aorta bursts and stops supplying blood and oxygen to the heart, causing the heart to stop beating.
The condition occurs most commonly in people who exercise excessively or use "prohibited" drugs like cocaine, the researchers note.
They also note that while many people think it's only men who experience this event, in fact, up to 35 percent of cases are women. Researchers have concluded that most people, especially older people, don't have to worry about heart attacks and death while having sex, according to Medical Express.
